Tutorials

On Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of going to the PATH center in the afternoon, I stayed at Temanj Yaze and taught English tutorial classes for the older elementary school kids there. PATH sponsors these after-school tutorial classes (for math, English, Amharic, and so on), and so I taught with Abenazar and three other teachers: Meselu, Gabeyaw, and Yared. They spoke great English and were really great to work with.

Meselu and Gabeyaw (both high school math teachers): And Yared (a middle school English teacher): I was under the impression that I would be "helping out" at these tutorial classes, helping individual kids with their homework or something, so it was a bit of a surprise the first day when they had me stand in front of all the kids and teach a lesson. Needless to say, I didn't have any experience teaching elementary school, I had no idea how much English the kids already knew, and I didn't quite know what I was doing! Haha. But it turns out they have pretty low expectations there, and are grateful for anything they receive, so it turned out okay! :) But I like to think I improved over time--I know I learned a lot from teaching these classes! Here are some pictures from these tutorial classes: Look at that beautiful smile!!! Here name is Meckdes and I think she is so gorgeous. And last but not least, this is one of my favorite kids: Tariku. He was so enthusiastic and eager to participate in all the tutorial classes. He was always smiling and was my little shadow, following me around wherever I went. Every day during his lunch at school, he would stand right outside the entry of the KG annex (the older kids weren't allowed in that area ) and wait for me to see him so he could wave to me. Sometimes I would come out of the annex and into the school courtyard to visit with him. The KG teachers would all tease me about how he was my little friend. :) He is such a special kid, and I love him so much!! You would too if you got to meet him.
